the situation in the deeper parts of bastar is much more complex than presented by mainstream media.

initially they fought against injustice and exploitation of locals. which was somewhat justified.

today, extreme left wing communist ideology has taken root. unemployment, underdevelopment and lack of education has made tribal youths gullible enough to fall for this ideology. they think nobody should rule them, all of the outsiders are here to exploit and take advantage of them, including government and their agencies.

there has been news regarding fake encounters and harassment by the police, which add fuel to the fire and push the youth towards maoism.

maoists constantly iterate that they want to preserve 'jal, jungle and zameen' along with local culture. to meet that end they are allowed to raise arm against these 'outsiders'.

as for the funding, they loot locals, they take commission from contractors and builders. they are also funded by few like minded people outside the dankaranya. they run vey large and sophisticated network.

the solution lies in the rapid spread of education and awareness and bringing the next generation into mainstream. but that is not easy too as the jungle is quite dense. due to naxals, government servants hesitate to take postings in those areas.

Hoping to spark some discussion on this point in [this MCU doc](https://maoistcommunistunion.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/mcu_and_the_working_class_movement-2.pdf) regarding logistics/transport as a supposedly key sector:

last year and had the same problem (among many others) of narrowly organizing around the labor aristocratic interests of the strand of imperial core workers they were in contact with. The resulting failures from this all stem from a fundamental incongruency with reality, but I'd like to know if there's been attempts by Communists to approach unionization in the core with a focus toward uniting with workers further down the value chain. I'd imagine an attempt at consciously subjugating first world unionization efforts in service to third world ones, with likely few (if any) benefits to the former, would end in some sort of failure but I'm certain it would produce new insights into the practical applications of these concepts, and be more productive than unimaginative salting or placing vague importance on "key" sectors. If nothing like that exists (which I'm not confident that it does) any suggestion of similar events from history would be helpful, my current knowledge is limited and I'm not sure where to start looking.

As for what we'll likely be seeing more of in the future from Communists in the u.$. (not sure of other core countries) is this:

It's pure propaganda, nothing of value at all. It's actually embarrassing such a book could be written given Lovell has no familiarity with global Maoism, any of the countries she discusses or their language, or really Maoism for that matter. Though it does point to the power of Maoism today that British orientalists still feel they have to step in and chide the colonized masses on getting too uppity.

If you really want a mediocre left-liberal book on a similar topic with some committment to basic bourgeois standards of scholarship, this is better

Though again, do not underestimate how ignorant scholars are. It's mostly a geo political overlook of maoism as a transnational , multi faceted phenomenon. The book dives into the history and basic tenets of chinese maoism and then goes on to show how it warmed up the global political arena of the 2nd half of 20th century, with maoist movements emerging in Cambodia, Indonesia, India, Peru and even various western countries. 

The way I see it, the bigger part of Lovell's study consists of an analysis of discursive dimension of maoism, because she places it in the larger context of cold war anti-communist narrative. CIA was an important actor in stirring up the myths surrounding Chinese communist party's alleged brainwashing methods in the form of mass propaganda, but on the other side (or so Lovell thinks) a romanticized version of maoism, that went along with the wave of revolutionary utopism and sectarianism, was a product of Edgar Snow's work Red Star Over China. Snow was the first western journalist that had been given insight into political operations of CCP by Mao personally, who saw to it that China's internationalism be adequatelly potrayed.

The potential of Lovell's "post-structuralist" and quasi-neutral take on maoism is, at a lot of times, at once overshadowded by her patronizing attitude and moralism towards Mao's policies, which she deems as autarcic and chaotic. Lovell thus recycles the typical postmodernist dogma, that has over the years become so prominent even in the most radical of leftist discourses: that the question of political implementation of marxist theses is in the last instance, always (just) a question of winning and maintaining power. Mao's astronomical achievements (poverty reduction, collectivization, the prolongment of average life-span and the increase in litteracy), which give CCPlegitimacy to this very day, along with some of the most prudent theoretical debates in the history of mankind, are all shown as a by product of a cult of personality and "clout chasing". 

Lovell ends the book with similarilly vague observations about Xi's rule, which seems to be recycling Mao era symbolism and rhetoric, and nothing more than that, because his is still a top-down rule. Xi is presented as a fervent nationalist and elitist, that successfully crushed all of the political oposition, to continue with the CCP's grip over the chinese society. Why he is supported by the large majority of chinese, what are the basic tenents of his thought, and how he means to implement it, are none of Lovell's concerns

Bottom line is:  this thing is definitely readable if you got the time, merely because of the historical context. But Lovell's liberal (or maybe self censoring) bashing does maoism no justice, and it is a proof that western academism is already in a full scale intelectual eclipse, under which projects with actual potential spiral down the endless hole of self-pitying and moral superiority.
